How To Choose The Right Contractor

Planning a renovation is a very exciting project to undertake, although it can seem like an overwhelming task. With the right contractor, guidance, preparation, and execution, you can transform an outdated home into a refreshed, modern living space. In this post we will be writing about how to choose the right contractor for you and your family.

My husband and I have had a construction business for eight years and through our experience we have come up with five useful tips on choosing the right contractor for your upcoming project.
When you meet with different contractors make sure you connect with them on a personal level since trust and communication are key for a successful project completion. Not only will this give you peace of mind, you will feel in the loop throughout the project, therefore eliminating tension and resulting in a more desirable and cost-effective renovation.
Ask to speak to past referrals or see pictures of past work to ensure that the contractor is passionate about quality production. It will put you at ease to know the contractor will not be cutting corners or misinterpreting plans, which in turn will end up costing you more money by the end of the renovation.
The contractor you hire will be constructing a new space that you will be enjoying for years, perhaps decades. It’s worth taking the time to find someone who is credible through industry affiliations such as the Better Business Bureau and Canadian Home Builders Association. Good old fashion word of mouth and a local’s favorite show a solid history in the community and that the company will be around for years to come. Hiring a reputable contractor will save you money by having things properly organized and by using their well-established network connections and resources. You will also reap the benefits of less stress, an enjoyable experience and a professionally completed project.
Get proposals.
The common recommendation for getting bids on a renovation/new build project is three bids. Make sure all contractors are bidding on the same scope of work so it’s easy for you to read and understand the estimates you are provided with. Take note which contractors respond the quickest, have a professional invoice displayed and have clear warranties that are attached to their service offerings.  We also suggest to look through their website and make sure their business values and their brand speak to you.
In today’s market, it’s important to choose a business that is contributing to a better environment. Examples include using less chemicals, having local partnerships, and an online billing system.
Choosing a contractor is an involved process, but will certainly be worth your time. Not only will they oversee your project in entirety, they will be watching out for your best interests. By selecting the right contractor you will see your efforts pay off when you have a successful project completed.
